Whirlwind: At least we got to buy some food just before the stalls closed. Though I can't believe how heavy these saddle bags are now - how much food did we even buy? //Shifts her wing and stump//
Icy: I just didn't notice how low we were getting - oh! Do you want me to carry your saddle bag too? I can fit it on back here.
Whirlwind: Nah, I can take it, don't worry about me
Icy: You know that's all I ever do. ...... Probably because you're getting so old.

Whirlwind: Hlín ? Is that you?
Hlín: //Sniffs and turns//
Whirlwind: I thought it was. What are you doing out here on your own? Are you okay?
Hlín: //Sniffs again//
Whirlwind: My name's Whirlwind. I'm a friend of your mom and dad. Well I guess more a friend of a friend of theirs.
Hlín: I - I - I've run away from home.
Whirlwind: Really? Wow, that's pretty drastic. Why would you want to do that? I'm sure everyone is worried about you.
Hlín: //Shakes her head and sniffs again// I had to! If I stayed.... If I stayed I'd only be a disappointment!
Whirlwind: Now I'm sure that's not true. From what I hear, Princess Twilight is always boasting about her lovely granddaughter. And that's you!
Hlín: No, no. My mom and my dad. They'll be disappointed in me if I stay at home. Because I'm not right.
Whirlwind: .... You're not 'right'....?
Hlín: //Takes a deep breath// I can't do anything right. I was supposed to be just like them! I was supposed to grow up and join the Royal Guard and pass and protect all the Royalty and be just like my parents! That's who I was supposed to be! It's who I am! //Wheezes//
Whirlwind: Hey now, it's okay. Don't hurt yourself. You can still be a guard one day I'm sure!
Hlín: No I can't. The doctor told me I can't - not ever. My lungs don't work properly, and I can't keep my breath very well and it means I'll never be able to train in the way the Royal Guards do. So now I just want to run away from home and go away forever so I can't see my mom and dad's disappointed faces when I tell them I can never be just like they were.
Whirlwind: .............
Hlín: I just... I don't even know who I am anymore. All I've ever wanted to do was to protect ponies... What do I do now I can't?
Whirlwind: //Looks at the sky//
Whirlwind: You know what... I was just like you once. I felt just like that too.
Hlín: You did??
Whirlwind: I always loved flying, my parents were both great flyers, and I always dreamed of one day becoming a Wonderbolt. I would practice hard, when I found the effort to, and I got to be one of the best. Ask anypony; I was awesome. But I took it for granted that it was something I would always do, because I was usually goofing off with Prism instead of training.... And then one day I came across a fire... And the pony inside needed help. It was my job to help them, so even though I was terrified I flew right in and got them out. But....
Hlín: You were a hero!
Whirlwind: //Chuckles sadly// Maybe. But I got trapped, and my wing got badly burned. Next thing I know, it just doesn't work anymore. I was hoping the feathers would grow back and some therapy would get it working again but in the end, it was just better that it came off. //Spreads wing//
Hlín: //Gasps//
Whirlwind: I couldn't be a Wonderbolt anymore. I couldn't even fly anymore. And I found myself thinking 'What even can I do now? Nothing. Nothing'
Hlín: Just like me....
Whirlwind: Just like you. But do you know what? I found out that the things your body can't do doesn't change who you are... If you saw a pony who needed your help, would you ignore them?
Hlín: No! I would try and help!
Whirlwind: Even though you're not a Guard?
Hlín: Yes, of course!
Whirlwind: Because that's the sort of pony you are - you help and protect regardless of what you can and can't be. Not being a Guard, not being able to breathe as well as other ponies, that doesn't make you any less you. //Lifts Hlín's chin with her hoof//
Hlín: But -
Whirlwind: Our bodies might have limited us, but these limitations don't define us. They're not who we are.
Hlín: //Begins to cry//
Whirwlind: They're just something we live with. We have to work harder than some ponies, because the things we thought we were supposed to do aren't what we end up doing, but we get to try again and find something even better! We have to turn our weaknesses into our strengths.
Hlín: //Sniffs//
Whirlwind: These things happen for a reason, and even if you can't see that reason now, one day you will. I would never have gotten closer to Stormy had I not lost my wing. I inspired him to become a firefighter and we've never been happier! I would never have had this conversation with you either. If losing my wing meant I could help you right now not run away and go home to your parents and remember that you're a kind and strong little pony, then it was worth it. //Smiles//
Hlín: //Hiccups// I - I will! I'll be a strong pony who helps anypony who needs it! I'll protect everyone who isn't strong like us! I promise, Whirlwind!
Whirlwind: There you go! You better keep that promise!
Hlín: I will! I will! I'll be better than any Guard!
Whirlwind: //Chuckles// Well you'll need to get back home first!
Hlín: Oh yeah.... My mom and dad will be pretty upset with me....
Whirlwind: Nahhh, I'll come with you. I'll tell them something about you coming to see me. It can be my fault.
Hlín: //Sniffs// Thank you so much Whirlwind... for everything.
Whirlwind: That's okay, and if you ever need to talk you can come straight to me. But just promise me one more thing -
Hlín: Anything!
Whirlwind: - if you're going to protect ponies, you're going to need to protect me from your mom when I get you home and tell her it was my idea you left without telling her - I can't fly away to escape!

Okay so I spent all of yesterday and today making this, furiously trying to get it entered on time for the end of the contest. (I nearly didn't make it - I'm so happy it got extended !)
I loved the tragic idea that Whirlwind had her burn damaged wing amputated, because in my head it just made her a character who was so, so much stronger. Then I've always loved Hlín and her sad story about not being able to join up to be a Royal Guard like her parents because of her breathing problems. And I realised that Whirlwind thought she was destined to fly, and Hlín thought she was destined to defend - but both are unable to because of the limitations their bodies have placed on them.
(Also heavily implied Icy Storm / Whirlwind - I'm not sorry!)

DESCRIPTION:
